A tribute to John's Aunt Harriet Doerr

Aunt Harriet, on right, pictured with her sisters Margie (John's mother), Liz and Leslie (Circa 1940). The sisters all predeceased her by many years.

Harriet was the subject of a cover story in the Los Angeles Times Magazine in February 1998.

A native of Pasadena, Harriet Doerr spent much of her adult life in Mexico, where she drew inspiration for many of her subsequent writings. Relatively late in life, she wrote three much lauded books, Stones for Ibarra (1984), Consider This Señora (1993) and The Tiger in the Grass (1995). Then, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times Magazine, she expressed her admiration for Hall of Fame Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, a master of the spoken word just as Harriet was with the written. In a thank-you letter to Harriet, Scully summarized her talents thusly:
"I wish I could speak as well as you write. My words are skywriting that quickly disappear but your words are inspiring, thoughtful and will last forever."
As usual, the ever precise Scully got it right.
